@bsdaitch "My Sarie Marias is far from my heart, but I hope? I will see her again. She lived in the area of the Moorivier (beautiful river), prior to the start of the war. Oh take me back to the old Transvaal, there where my Sarie lives. There at the bottom of the corn field, by the green thorn tree, there lives my Sarie Marais x2 I was scared that the English (Kakies) would catch me and send me far across the ocean So I fled to the side of the Upington sand, there next to the Grootrivier

I can remember singing this song at my school in Rhodesia. We loved to sing it even though we did not know what all the words meant in English. It? was only later after leaving in South Africa and reading Never a dull moment by Dr Malherbe that I found the whole translation. Now living in USA I listen to this song when I feel homesick.

@SeniorSuperstud ...
@SeniorSuperstud Have you ever read the book by Dr? E G Malherbe - Never a dull moment. If you have not I am sure you will find it very interesting how the song became Sarai Marais. Dr Malherbe was a descended from Gideon Malherbe a French Huguenot who landed in the Cape in 1688. Thanks for the info regarding how the song arrived in the Cape.

The Boers were a? ...
The Boers were a? proud and God-fearing nation,called "the white tribe of Africa" by Jacob Zuma.They had one fatal weakness- a horror of the Non-White races,which eventually led to their downfall. By the 1970's, the black masses had driven the Portuguese from Africa,in 1976 the slaying of blacks in Soweto caused worldwide condemnation and by 1980 the Whites had fled Rhodesia. South Africa was exposed and by 1994 the Boer leader de Klerk was forced to submit to black rule.
